I was out with Rob today hoping to head for Ben Macdui and return over Cairngorm if the weather and conditions would allow. We set off in some fresh snow from the Cairngorm ski centre and made our way out past Coire an Lochain to climb up onto the plateau. It was soon obvious we would be breaking trail all the way in fresh drifting snow and whiteout conditions. As we headed up the going was getting fairly hard and the winds were in our faces so we decided to traverse the rims of the northern corries instead, which proved to be a good move.
Our views got whiter and whiter with the occasional group, climber or skier appearing on our way over Carn Lochain and on up Stob Coire an t-Sneachda where we hid in the bothy bag for our lunch as the winds and snow were pretty fierce. After lunch we continued round the corries and got a surprise with some limited views onto Coire an t-Sneachda before returning to the white room.
The plan was now to climb Cairngorm and it was getting much wilder with falling snow in a whiteout and rime ice forming on our ski goggles. A short respite behind the weather station and we were on our way down to the Ptarmigan restaurant for a hot drink. We discussed the option of a down hill ride on the funicular railway before opting to walk down and it proved a good choice as we emerged out of the clouds to views of Stathspey and even spotted some lovely Ptarmigan along the way!
