Corryhully and Gulvain

Corryhully and Gulvain

Corryhully and Gulvain a both lovely ridge walks set back a good distance from the nearest roads. The Corryhully horsehoe is home to two Munros: Sgurr Thuilm and Sgurr nan Coireachan with an entertaining and rugged ridge walk between them. Gulvain is a single Munro with a beautiful ridge between it and its south top. Both the Corryhully Horseshoe and Gulvain are accessed from the Fort William to Mallaig road. Because there are fantastic approach tracks to both walks the use of a mountain bike makes them shorter days.

This is a Bike & Hike event so you will need to bring a mountain bike and a helmet with you.

Corryhully Horseshoe

We start at the Glenfinnan visitors centre pay & display car park. The cycle in is on tarmac most of the way as it’s a private estate road. As we near the Corryhully bothy it becomes rougher and starts to climb uphill so we will plan to leave the bikes at this point. The route continues on a track up towards the hills and after crossing a bridge over the river we reach a path for Sgurr Thuilm. It’s a steep climb that eases off to give good walking all the way to our first Munro. The ridge between the summits is fantastic with several tops and occasional rocky steps to reach Sgurr nan Coireachan. A rocky ridge takes us down steeply in places to pick up a stalkers path back to the track. Once on it a short walk reunites us with the bikes for the ride back.

Distance: 22km Ascent: 1450m Time: 7-9hrs

Gulvain

Gulvain

Another long approach on a good track makes for a good bike ride in shortening the day considerably. Once at the end of the track we reach a boggy path heading away up the steep slopes of Gulvain. It’s a big climb, but as we reach the first minor summit the views really open up and soon the south top is reached. A lovely walk with views in every direction leads us to the highest point and main summit of Gulvain. The ridge connecting the two summits is wonderful, which is a good things as we retrace our route all the way back to the bikes. It’s an easy ride back to the start.

Distance: 21km Ascent: 1250m Time: 6-8hrs
