Glen Shiel and Beinn Sgritheall

Glen Shiel and Beinn Sgritheall

The mountains of Glen Shiel offer some fantastic ridge walking and beautiful rocky peaks. It’s a steep sided glen with mountains on all sides making for a dramatic highland location. This event focuses on the south side with the Saddle, Sgurr na Sgine and the 7 Munros on the South Glen Shiel ridge as well as the outlier Beinn Sgritheall. All three days guided walking Glen Shiel are demanding in length or steepness.

The Saddle

Looking back down Forcan Ridge

An Diollaid or the Saddle is one of the finest mountains in the area with the impressive rocky Forcan ridge leading up to its summit. Our planned route will take in this scramble weather permitting before the steep descent on the way to Sgurr na Sgine the second munro of day one. There are options for the descent route and the difficulties on the Forcan ridge can be avoided if necessary. It is a real classic day out in the Scottish hills!

Distance: 13km Ascent: 1400m Time: 7-9hrs

The South Glen Shiel or South Cluanie Ridge

Sgurr an Lochain

The second day of guided walking in Glen Shiel is to traverse the South Glen Shiel. This is then longest day. To do this we will meet at the end of the walk and car share back to the start near the Cluannie Inn. We head along the old road and up a fine stalkers path before open slopes to reach our first Munro Creag a’Mhaim. Because the ridge gives such excellent walking we soon the second Druim Shionnaich. As we traverse Aonach Air Chrith the highest Munro of the day there is some easy scrambling on the descent breaking up the grassy ridge. Next is Maol Chinn-dearg and what feels like the halfway point. It is easy to escape the ridge at this point if we necessary.

An enjoyable section of walking takes us over grass and rock up to Sgurr an Doire Leathain before a dramatic descent to Bealach Sgurr an Lochain. From here it’s a steep pull with some easy rock steps upto the fine summit of Sgurr an Lochain. We then have a steep descent to reach Bealach Fraoch Choire with the option to bypass some minor tops on the way. Our final Munro summit is Creag nan Damh at the end of a steady climb. There are couple of descent options from here back to the glen to complete a long and wonderful days walking.

Distance: 21km Ascent: 1900m Time: 8-12hrs

Beinn Sgritheall

Beinn Sgritheall

Beinn Sgritheall is an outlier round in the area and provides a wonderful finish to the trip. It’s a long drive around via Glen Elg to Arnisdale and as close to sea level start as is possible. A very steep climb brings us up to the Bealach Arnisdale before a steep scree section leads us onto the summit ridge. Here we enjoy a fantastic walk along the ridge and up onto the summit of Beinn Sgritheall. The views to Knoydart and Skye are spectacular. The route down heads west on a lovely ridge before a steep descent through trees brings us out on the road a couple of kilometres from the start point. 9km & 1050m. 5-6hrs.
