Winter Skills Refresher Course

This 1 day winter skills refresher course is perfect for anybody wanting brush up on their existing skills. It will focus more on the basic movement skills and using the ice axe and crampons. If it has been a while since you did a winter skills course then this is perfect for you. I also think that if you haven’t done any winter skills then this would give you a good introduction.

All my courses are suitable for hill walkers with a reasonable level of fitness. You can be new to winter or experienced. They focus on skills for hill walkers so no ropes.

Following an equipment check we will head up into the Cairngorms and snow to cover the following topics and skills if conditions allow:

  • Equipment & clothing
  • Personal movement & kicking steps
  • Ice axe self-belay & self-arrest
  • Crampon use & techniques
  • Avalanche awareness and weather conditions
  • Route Planning & decision making
  • Navigation
  • Emergency Shelters

You will need an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and a helmet for this course. I have a limited number of ice axes, crampons and helmets available for hire at £10 per person for the course.

For more detailed information about winter boots then please see my 2 day winter skills course page.

Please note that weather and snow conditions will dictate what and where we go so the itinerary is subject to change.

I can arrange to run these courses on demand as long as there are winter conditions. Happy to travel throughout the Scottish Highlands. Additionally these courses can be booked as a private day that can focus more on a specific winter skill. Usually in the form of a mountain walk practising desired topics. Just get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Further information on winter skills and safety in the hills is available at Mountaineering Scotland #ThinkWinter!
